Spring Garden 2010!

37 weeks pregnant! And my garden looks quite pregnant itself. It is a lush flower jungle, entwined with chard, beets, carrots, onions, kale and cilantro.

It was time to pull the gorgeous pink tulips. After more rain and sunshine, the petals fell and they were done for this year. I do plan on storing them until next year however. In order to do this properly, I need to investigate further. But I do know they must be in a dry, dark space (brown paper bag stapled, I think will do) and refrigerated.

My beets are amazing right now! Getting so big. As you may recall, I have already done a large harvest and steamed them for dinner, greens and bulb. Time to harvest another large bunch!

My jungle of sweet peas make me so happy. My husband thinks I should have thinned them more, which he may have a point, but I still LOVE them! They are almost 7 feet tall and smell intoxicating!!

We planted many more carrot seeds in our patch. As you can see, they have come up, but their is plenty of room to fill in more. I am actually happy we planted the seeds at scattered times, because this will allow us to have carrots from this patch for a longer period of time.

Right Bed, furthest from the street:

I love these bubble classic poppies! They are so dainty and their movement in the breeze reflects this. Perfect for Spring!

My kale has shot up and is really filling out and getting stockier.

Red tulips are beautiful.

Cilantro is not only lush and thick now, it is getting tall!

Harvest time for onions and chard! They are out of control! Very happy plants!

Updated Pictures: Valentine's Day!

My wonderful valentine of 10 years gardening with me!

My breathtaking tulips!

My sweet peas have finally started to bloom! They are over 6 feet tall now!

First snapdragon in bloom.

My lovely red tulips have begun to bloom as well! Perfect timing for Valentines!

Poppies!

My kale has shot up and is really getting hearty and strong.

I am amazed at how lush my cilantro is. Getting bigger and bigger each visit. And the two kale starters behind it are finally picking up as well.

Soon, I will begin harvesting some of my bunching green onions. And my chard is growing non-stop! We just had some in our stir fry the other night!

My tulips are in bloom! Ahhh, it feels like the start of Spring officially now! This made my Valentine's Day week!

This one pink tulip has these gorgeous stripes of dark pink that make it look like delicate candy!

My sweet peas look like they are also ready to burst with buds filling their robust stalks. I can't wait to see what colors pop out!

The broccoli (above) I harvested today and I also decided to begin harvesting some of my beets. They are all different sizes, so some need more time and others are ready!

Notice the broccoli plant is gone in this picture above because it was taken after harvest.

A proud mama of her beets and also yellow chard (underneath beets). I am 33 weeks pregnant here.

I love the deep red color of beets. So rich and royal! And I know these are going to be SO sweet! I think just a quick steam is all they need to be delicious! The greens are also such a wonderful source of vitamins! I will, of course, be using those as well!

Updated Pictures: February 1

(Above) Another harvest of broccoli! We've had so much that we've been eating it for about a month and a half. With this HUGE head, we made homemade, organic broccoli beef. It was SO yummy! (I also put this large mug next to the head, so you could see how BIG it got!)

My poppies are doing great! All the rain has made some of the leaves a bit yellow, but I have just continued to deadhead them and all are fine. Poppies love this cooler weather, but they don't need so much water. I am pleased they've made it through the rain okay.

This patch of kale (above) is doing great! It is getting more hearty and darker green. Growth is happening!

My cilantro has done wonderful for this time of year. I always thought it was a summer plant, but it is getting so lush and growing at a faster pace that the kale starters next to it (which are supposed to be great winter plants).

Chard is still doing wonderful! We are eating it all the time!

RIGHT BED, Closest to the street:

My tulips are LOVING this rainy, cool weather! They seem to be growing several inches a week!

More broccoli!

This is my beet patch (above). I am letting them get a bit larger before harvest.

My carrot patch from seed is slow to start. As you can see below, their are some small sprouts coming up, but not as many as I planted. As expected, I think many were washed away in the big storms of January. Also, notice I did a boarder of bi-colored tulips, since the last time. I'm excited to see them bloom!
